Many Americans’ perception of the businessman drastically
shifted after the collapse of the stock market in 2009. Prior to the burst of
the bubble, businessmen were held in revere and were idolized for their knowledge
and wealth. After the economic slump, many Americans, who lost everything, felt
blame lied in the greedy hands of the businessmen, who claimed huge yearly
bonuses and other perks. Kirn’s2001 Ryan is a self-loathing antagonist who is the
quintessential post-economic collapse stereotype. Ryan’s business partners in the
novel are also viewed as self-absorbed, materialistic demigods. Reitman is
contrast, underplays this side of the businessman and creates a more approachable,
humble world of business in his 2009 movie. Reitman softens Ryan by adding supportive, nurturing females,
removing the Bogart Businessmen, and by adding more general sympathy towards the
laid-off individuals this creates a politically, neutral protagonists that a
wide spectrum of audience members can personally relate to.
Your introduction is great. It is weird how in the movie is not actually alone, even though he talks about that being a part of his life, and in the book he really is alone. Your differences in the two are right on the spot and it looks like you will not have any issues on writing your essay.
ReplyDeleteI think your comparison is good. I think the book portrays the main character in a more gloomy state, where as the in the movie circumstances aren't as difficult. I'm guessing the "kirn's2001" in the middle of the paragraph is a typo? The content of this introduction paragraph sounds like a promising beginning to your essay.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on this one. I agree that Clooney's character is easier to relate to, where as I had little sympathy for the character when reading the book. I think a good proofreading of your thesis before you submit your draft would help significantly.

Good comparisons on your post. The economy is a huge difference in the book and the movie. Also, the book describes Bingham as a super lonely man who is uncomfortable with human contact and is self centered, but the movie was completely different in the characterizations as well as the overall presentation. Great post.

I really like how you are useing the book and the movie draw your comparison and create your thesis. I agree the movie makes it easir to relate to the character. I find it interesting your talk about the economy and what changes it has brought with it. I think it makes it easier to understand why the movie is so different than the book. It makes a big difference being written and made 8 years apart. I think your thesis will lend to an interesting paper. Thank you for your input. Good luck.
